He was born Jacques Nathan and changed his last name during World War II to Garamond, making Nathan his middle name. He studied at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and was director of Architecture d'Aujourd'hui before beginning his career as a designer.
He was a graphic artist, his works developed during and after World War II as a graphic designer, he began working in packaging, book design, illustrations and catalog design. One of his most important works was the poster for an Exhibition on human rights in 1949 for UNESCO and also in posters and advertising for brands such as Mazda, Ducretet-Thomson, Air France and Telefunken.
He co-founded the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) in 1952. In 1957 he was awarded a gold medal at the Milan Triennale. In 1964 he was invited to documenta III (in the Graphic Department) in Kassel. He taught at the École Internationale and was a professor at the Ecole Supérieure des Graphiques Arts Penninghen in Paris. Since 1985 he has devoted himself mainly to painting.
