Conrad Marca-Relli (Boston, June 5, 1913 - Parma, August 29, 2000) was an American painter belonging to the first generation of artists of the New York School (Abstract Expressionism), whose artistic innovation in the 1950s was recognized worldwide, including Paris, as a leading artistic movement in the post-war era. Throughout his career, Marca-Relli created collages of monumental scale. He combined oil painting with collage, employing intense colors, broken surfaces and expressionistic splashes. He also experimented with metallic materials and vinyl. Over the years, the collages developed an abstract simplicity, evidenced by black or somber colors and rectangular shapes isolated against a neutral background.
