In 1959, the government ended the autarkic system and launched the Economic Stabilization Plan, which was approved by the IMF and the OEEC. The main objective was to restructure the Spanish economy and reduce the high inflation rate. To this end, a series of economic measures were implemented, which would be continued in the Development Plans that gave rise to the phenomenon of “developmentalism.”
Just a few years later, in 1964, Spain celebrated 25 years of peace since the end of the Civil War and was on the cusp of a new era in which foreign tourism would play a hugely important role thanks to the propaganda program created by Manuel Fraga as Minister of Information and Tourism, who revived and exploited the slogan “Spain is Different.”
The posters under this slogan would mark a new trend, both in terms of form and iconography, especially when compared to those of previous eras. In terms of design, due largely to the work of José García Ochoa, special emphasis was placed on the photographic image. Photography played a crucial role in demonstrating the richness and diversity of our country, which attested to the abundance of tourist attractions, highlighting “difference” as an essential characteristic that could be exploited for tourism purposes.
