In spite of his formal artistic education, Genovés moved away from the academicist line from very early on, after briefly trying out different styles, the Valencian painter gradually moved towards figurative painting. After briefly trying out different styles, the Valencian painter progressively moved towards figurative painting. His work began to be defined in the sixties, this is due to his original union between the motifs he represents and his way of presenting them. He uses a language with a strong photographic and filmic influence, reminiscent of North American pop, by using techniques such as aerosol, tampons or stencils, with the intention of producing images that simulate having been created by a machine, in this way the artistic message is found in the work as a whole, not only in the brushstroke. In other words, he draws from the style of the mass media and pop art, in his way of representing the objects of mass culture, but at the same time he distances himself from the motifs portrayed by the latter. This is where the particularity of his work emerges; the mixture of a language of mass communication combined with the drama of a political and social situation. Genovés had to attend to the convulsive social and political reality, not only in which Spain was immersed, but also in which many other countries were suffering. Inscribed in a national context of dictatorship, an active participant in strikes and demonstrations repressed by the dictatorship,3 he is a witness and collector of images of civil conflicts taking place in Peru, Northern Ireland, the United States or Vietnam, among others. He pours into his work all this aesthetics of fear and repression, thus offering an easily accessible painting with socially committed themes, far removed from the prevailing informalism.
"I had the perception that informalism distanced people from painting. This made me uncomfortable. In a way I have always wanted to keep people close. I was always worried about becoming an isolated painter in my studio and that my work would not resonate or resonate with others. The idea that what I did, no matter how good it was, would only be of interest to five people was, and is, inconceivable to me, something akin to suicide. I have always wanted to be close to people, I have always sought communication." Juan Genovés
His continuous social commitment to portray those who fought against Franco's dictatorship allows him to follow the historical development and consequences of repression throughout the second Franco regime (1959-1975). After passing through the Hondo group, promoter of a neo-figuration with an expressionist character that in turn took on informalist procedures, and as a result of a broad expressive search, he found his most personal style, becoming a fundamental artist of the Spanish post-war avant-garde. This change links Genovés' art to what has been called political realism. thanks to wikipedia.org
