This painting was made during Picasso's stay in Barcelona between June and November 1917 with Serge de Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company, which presented the ballet Parade at the Gran Teatre del Liceu.

Stylistically, in El paseo de Colón Picasso plays with the duality between synthetic cubism and pointillism. The paint is applied irregularly, combining brushstrokes with a lot of matter with other lighter ones. The window is conceived as a structure, and the artist uses the distortion of forms and the practical absence of colors typical of cubism to project the viewer towards the maritime landscape in the background, this one with color and made with brushstrokes characteristic of neoimpressionism.
