José María Sicilia began studying at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Madrid, but left for Paris in 1980. In 1982, he exhibited for the first time in the gallery Trans/Form, his first productions have an expressionist tendency. In 1984 he inaugurated his first individual exhibition in Spain. In the eighties he is considered one of the most prestigious young Spanish artists. In 1989 he received the National Prize of Plastic Arts from the Spanish Ministry of Culture.
He has participated in numerous exhibitions, collective and individual, in the main cities of the world. His work is represented in museums such as the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, the MOMA and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. He currently resides between Paris and Sóller, where he has created a foundation dedicated to young artists. In 2015, he was awarded the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts.
