After starting out in the family workshop as a wall painter, Josep Guinovart trained at the Escola de Mestres Pintors and the Escola d'Arts i Oficis in Barcelona, and in 1953 he went to Paris with a scholarship from the French state. Back in Catalonia, in 1954 he founded, together with other artists such as Antoni Tàpies and Joan-Josep Tharrats, the Taüll group, which brought together the pictorial avant-garde of those years. With a multifaceted production (engraving, drawing, poster design, painting, sculpture, theatrical scenery and tapestry, among others) and after a first figurative stage, from 1957 he practiced pictorial abstraction with large format works, a clear material intention and the use of three-dimensional elements outside the conventional art world. They are works close to assemblage in which he used from drums and burnt wood to boxes and waste material. Over the years he returned to the drawing traces that he had already used initially, delimiting areas of color on the canvas or tracing calligraphy. Guinovart's informalism incorporated the presence of the Mediterranean landscape, suggested by warm blue and ochre tones, and other elements that evoke the countryside and the earth; but he also produced works with a strong social and political implication.
