"Grupo Pórtico" was the pioneer of Spanish abstract or informalist painting. It arose in April 1947 with the exhibition Pórtico presenta nueve pintores held at the Centro Mercantil in Zaragoza, which included works by Fermín Aguayo, Alberto Duce and Santiago Lagunas, among others. The following year Eloy Giménez Laguardia joined the group, who together with Santiago Lagunas and Fermín Aguayo formed its nucleus until 1952, when Pórtico dissolved after having exhibited his work in Santander (Saloncillo de Alerta, February 1949), Bilbao (Galería Stvdio, April 1948 and November 1950) or Madrid (Galería Buchholz, January 1947 and June 1948; and Galería Palma, January 1949). The Pórtico group opened the path of post-war avant-garde painting, which would be continued by Dau al Set (1948), and later by Parpalló (1956), El Paso or Equipo 57 (both 1957).

His painting was influenced by Paul Klee, Joan Miró or Joaquín Torres García, and evolved from an initial neo-cubist expressionism to pure abstraction following constructivist paths, dominated by earthy chromatic ranges and a brushstroke not exempt of gestural lyricism, The work reflected the difficult political and social situation after the immediate aftermath of the Civil War and provoked a great deal of misunderstanding on the part of the traditional critics of the time, although they were celebrated by intellectuals of the stature of Jean Cassou, Ricardo Gullón, Federico Torralba Soriano, José Castro Arines, Carlos Edmundo de Ory and Mathias Goeritz. They also received the support of the members of the café Niké in Zaragoza, headed by Miguel Labordeta.
