Mompó studied at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts (1943-1948), obtained a scholarship for the Granada Painters' Residence, and exhibited in 1951 at the historic Mateu Gallery in Valencia, a beacon of modernity in the stifling Francoist environment. Shortly afterwards, in 1954, he visited Paris, then settled at the Spanish Academy in Rome and traveled to Holland, where he was particularly influenced by the Cobra Group. Unlike them, Mompó always maintained a certain poetic fidelity to his Mediterranean origins, characterized in particular by chromatic sensitivity and a certain playful vivacity. Over time, he found his own voice, which emerged from writing, signs, and color, forming a series of increasingly light and subtle constellations; more elemental, in short. In 1968, he participated in the Venice Biennale, where he won the UNESCO Prize. In 1984, he was awarded the National Prize for Plastic Arts and in 1992, posthumously, the Spanish Ministry of Culture awarded him the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts. ( thanks to IVAM.es )
