This first exhibition in Spain dedicated to Pierre Bonnard (Fontenay-aux-Roses, 1867-Le Cannet, 1947) presents 60 oil paintings, one watercolour and one gouache produced between 1890 and 1945.
It includes works from his early period, with a technique close to that of the Post-Impressionists, such as The Fair (1892), or scenes of the streets and everyday life of late 19th-century bohemian Paris, such as La Place Clichy (1894). Others denote the influence of Japanese art, an inspiration for the Nabi Symbolist group to which the painter belonged. Bonnard, who combined his law studies with drawing and painting classes at the Académie Julian Denis, decided in 1887 to give up his job as a lawyer to devote himself to painting.
From 1909 he travelled through parts of the south of France, where he spent long periods in search of colour and light. There his works acquired their own style, and he painted intimate scenes with a personal language.
Bonnard hoped to continue and surpass the contributions of Impressionism. Thus, in works such as Various Fruit in a Bowl (1934), he reorients the framing of the still life while diluting the brushwork to achieve an overall atmosphere of greater spontaneity and naturalness.
This exhibition brings together samples of the favourite genres of this artist, for whom painting was - as André Lhote explains - a song to the joy of living: female nudes, which in Bonnard take on a psychological and emotional dimension; landscapes, conceived poetically in unusual and arbitrary colours, which tend towards non-figuration; and still lifes, far removed from naturalism ( thanks to march.es )
