This collective photography exhibition organised with works from its own collection by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and curated by the director of its Department of Photography, John Szarkowski, offers an overview of the art of photography in the United States and its development since 1960.

The title of the exhibition, Mirrors and Windows, illustrates the fundamental dichotomy that defines the art of photography today as the artist's own expression on the one hand, and as a means of exploring reality on the other. That is, it can be considered as a mirror, a romantic expression that refers to the idea of the photographer's sensitivity being projected onto reality, or as a window, through which the outside world can be observed as it really is.

The selection of 185 photographs in the exhibition reflects many of the changes that took place in American life during the 1960s and 1970s, while also proposing a representative approach to the enormous variety of themes, techniques and aesthetics that characterise contemporary photography. Among the 101 artists included in the exhibition are such essential names as Diane Arbus, Paul Caponigro, Mark Cohen, Walter Chappell, Judy Dater, Bruce Davidson, Roy DeCarava, William Eggleston, Elliott Erwitt, Lee Friedlander, Dave Heath, George Krause, Ernst Haas, Robert Heinecken, Ken Josephson, Les Krims, Robert Mapplethorpe, Ray Metzker, Joel Meyerowitz, Nicholas Nixon, Tod Papageorge, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, Naomi Savage, Stephen Shore, Lew Thomas, George Tice, Jerry Uelsmann, Andy Warhol and Garry Winogrand, among others.  ( thanks to March.es )
