The first exhibition in Spain on Sonia Delaunay (Gradzihsk, 1885-Paris, 1979) and Robert Delaunay (Paris, 1885-Montpellier, 1941) traces the joint evolution of this pair of artists who fled the First World War and, like a good number of avant-garde artists, settled in the Iberian Peninsula, where they played a fundamental role in the birth of a Spanish avant-garde.
The Delaunay couple are among the most outstanding avant-garde artists of the beginning of the last century, especially for their research into light, colour and simultaneous contrasts. Robert moved away from the orthodoxy of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso to introduce colour into the field of Cubism, something which resulted, as the poet and theorist termed it, in the development of Orphism. Along with these plastic advances, the approach proposed by his wife, Sonia, to the world of fashion, book illustration or interior decoration was also of an extremely revolutionary nature. To a large extent, her ability to link high culture with the space of everyday life was a step on from the central concerns of the Bauhaus in the 1920s.
The 158 works that make up this exhibition - 58 oils, 15 drawings, 24 gouaches, 21 watercolours and 11 engravings - trace a path through almost all the couple's interests, from works of different periods by both artists to illustrations and bookbinding, toys, simultaneously woven tapestries and cloths, or costume and stage designs for the ballet.
