This is the first exhibition in Spain on the work of Willem de Kooning (Rotterdam, 1904-East Hampton, New York, 1997), a member of the New York School together with painters such as Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and Robert Motherwell. The exhibition presents 39 oils, lithographs and sculptures produced entirely in the 1970s.
In the early 1920s, de Kooning took night classes in drawing in Rotterdam, and in 1926 he stowed away on a ship to the United States. The following year he moved to New York and came into contact with the artists’ colony of Woodstock. He met Arshile Gorky, who became his friend and a major influence over the next decade. In 1943 he married the painter Elaine Fried. During the 1940s and 1950s, he worked on his famous paintings entitled Woman, dramatic and fragmented portraits painted with grand gestures in a synthesis of figuration and abstraction.
In 1961 he started to spend time at The Springs, East Hampton, staying in a small house next to the cemetery until the construction of his new studio was completed two years later. Long Island gave his work a certain serenity as a result of the stability of his personal life and the tranquillity of the surroundings. During those years, the painter fundamentally tried to incorporate the light and colour of the landscape into his work. In 1966 he began working on sculptural versions of the figures in his paintings, such as the two presented in this exhibition. ( thanks to March.es )
