This exhibition, organised by the Saint Louis Art Museum (Missouri) with the participation of the American Express Foundation and the United States National Endowment for the Arts, presents the work of Roy Lichtenstein (New York, 1923-1997) for the first time in Spain.
Lichtenstein - who took part in the opening ceremony of the exhibition in Madrid - is an innovative artist, one of the greatest exponents of American Pop Art. Interested in the media, advertising and comics, he makes use of appropriation, free interpretation and association of images from contemporary American culture and masterpieces from the past, and from there, through a very personal working process and the application of subtle irony, he goes on to produce an oeuvre that gives him an indisputably prominent position in the art scene of the 20th century.
His reflection on the relationship between low and high culture leads him to open up his creative world to society and to relate themes considered incompatible by traditional culture. His use of point and line as minimal pictorial signs alludes to the matrix with which images of popular culture are printed in magazines and newspapers.
The exhibition includes 92 works - 30 paintings, eight sculptures and 54 drawings - produced between 1970 and 1980, covering themes and series such as his Mirrors; Mouldings; Still Lifes; Studio Walls and Trompe l'oeil; Triptychs; Artist's Studies; Boats, Flowers, Cubist Still Lifes, Abstractions; Purist Still Lifes; Futurism; Still Lifes for the Office; Surrealism; Amerindian Surrealism; Expressionism; and Brushstrokes and Sculpture.
