Haring studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Gifted with a genius of the stroke, this virtuoso draftsman - even as a child he drew incessantly - worked quickly, tirelessly and was enormously prolific, often producing works to musical accompaniment. He worked on all types of surfaces and his response to contemporary media included disseminating reproductions of his images on merchandise through his New York retail store, the Pop Shop, which opened in 1986.

The political messages and ideas he conveyed are not only part of his legacy, but have had a very real influence on other artists and society. His paintings, works on paper and sculptures "subway drawings" speak of social justice, individual freedom and change. A subversive icon and Pop activist, Haring was committed to social causes throughout his life: even when he was very young, he was driven by a desire to change the world.

Aware of this and often choosing the street and public spaces to come into contact with as many people as possible, he fought tirelessly against racism, capitalism, violence and injustice in all its forms, with particular emphasis on apartheid in South Africa, the threat of nuclear war, environmental destruction, homophobia and the AIDS epidemic (diagnosed HIV-positive in 1988, he set up a charitable foundation, dedicated in part to helping those affected by AIDS and HIV). The layout of the exhibition offers an account of Haring's sociopolitical obsessions.

Paris was certainly the right place for this major exhibition. After participating in the exhibition Figuration Libre France/USA, presented in 1984 at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, along with Robert Combas, Hervé Di Rosa, Jean-Michel Basquiat and others,d.
