This year 2026, the Barcelona Summer Festival marks the fiftieth anniversary of the first edition of this celebration of the performing arts and music, held in the summer of 1976. What was, at the time, an unprecedented experiment in self-managed theatre, led by the city’s collective of actors, actresses and theatre professionals, heralded the arrival of democracy. The first local elections of the democratic era were to be held shortly afterwards. And, before long, the City Council would take over the festival, the seed of what would eventually become a leading theatre event in southern Europe.
