Yoko Ono is a Japanese conceptual artist, performer and activist, a key figure in contemporary art since the 1960s. Trained in music and philosophy, she was a pioneer of the Fluxus movement, and her work is characterised by its experimental, participatory and poetic approach, challenging the boundaries between art and life.
In the 1960s and 1970s, she developed her famous ‘instructions’ (texts that invite the audience to imagine or complete the work), installations, performances and multimedia pieces. Works such as Cut Piece (1964), Grapefruit (1964) and Sky Ladder are now icons of conceptual art.
Her work addresses themes such as peace, human fragility, the body, feminism, ecology and collective participation, with a minimalist, sensitive and radical aesthetic.
Throughout her life, she has exhibited in museums around the world and has been recognised for her vision ahead of her time and for having broken new ground in 20th and 21st century art.
