Joaquim Chancho began with a more figurative style of painting, using constructive elements. After spending time in Paris around 1970, his work shifted towards geometric and minimalist abstraction. He began to explore geometry, line, composition, space and the relationship between colour, form and structure.
Throughout his career, he developed his own language, based on the tension between the geometric—order, structure, grid—and the gestural—free, calligraphic strokes, vibration.
His works are usually large-format, with compositions of horizontal and vertical lines, often asymmetrical, proposing visual rhythms of light, shadow, movement and silence.
Chancho has held numerous solo and group exhibitions, both in Catalonia and internationally.
His work forms part of important public and private collections, including MACBA (Barcelona), the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam) and the La Caixa Foundation, among other relevant institutions.
He is considered one of the key figures in contemporary abstract painting in Catalonia and Spain, due to his conceptual rigour, his search for an essential language and his consistency over decades.
