Candide, or Optimism (original French title: Candide, ou l'Optimisme) is a philosophical tale published by the enlightened philosopher Voltaire in 1759. Voltaire never openly admitted to being the author of the controversial novel, which is signed with the pseudonym Monsieur le docteur Ralph (literally, Mr. Doctor Ralph). However, it was very clear from the moment of its publication that this was his work.

The tale tells the story of Candide, a boy raised in a Westphalian castle, where he lives an Edenic life and takes philosophy lessons from his tutor Pangloss. Because these lessons are founded on Leibnizian optimism, Candide grows up indoctrinated into thinking that he lives in "the best of all possible worlds." The story narrates the abrupt end of his perfect lifestyle, followed by his slow and painful disillusionment at the terrible calamities he has to suffer later on.
